'If a building where 72 died doesn't remind the government of the risks that exist, nothing will'
Irish Sunday People
|June 15, 2025
HUNDREDS of thousands of people still live in potential firetraps, eight years after the Grenfell Tower blaze.
The tragedy in June 2017 killed 72 people after a fire on the fourth floor - drawn upwards by the highly flammable cladding encasing the building - rapidly consumed the 24-storey block.
Last night, a silent walk was held to commemorate those who died in the West London blaze exactly eight years ago.
But promises that there should be no repeat of the tragedy have been beset by rows over who should foot the bill after it emerged that similar dangerous materials have been used on developments across the UK.
Campaigns by tenants and leaseholders have called for the cost to be shouldered by either the buildings' owners, those who built them or local authorities.
