Fishing trips to reward jailbirds

- BY STIAN ALEXANDER

THEY have plenty of experience of getting caught and now prisoners are going on fishing trips as a reward for good behaviour.

Inmates at HMP Kirklevington Grange, North Yorks, are bussed 20 miles to the Tees estuary, where they cast off from the beach, hoping to hook cod, mackerel, whiting and sea bass.

Other activities at the open jail include a 109-mile hikes along the Cleveland Way - which is broken down into “manageable” walks.

The full route starts in Helmsley and crosses the North York Moors National Park before heading south along the stunning coastline to Filey.
