Peace is only security

THE Taoiseach and Tanaiste have expressed their fears over outright war in the Middle East after Israel and Iran hit each other with devastating air strikes.
The Tanaiste Simon Harris confirmed yesterday that he spoke with Irish ambassadors in Israel, Iran and Egypt as fears grew for the safety of all those in the region.
As Iran fired hundreds of missiles at Israel in response to the Israeli attacks on Iranian targets, Foreign Affairs Minister Harris called on both sides to de-escalate the situation.
He said: "I have spoken this morning to our ambassadors in Tehran, Tel Aviv and Cairo, who have briefed me on the situation and developments overnight. I am pleased to say our Embassy staff are safe and well.
"This is a dangerous moment for the Middle East. I am deeply concerned about the continuing exchange of air attacks between Israel and Iran.
"I reiterate my call for both sides to urgently de-escalate, to open channels for communication and allow a return to diplomacy.
"Continuing military action will not bring security for any of the people of the region.
"Our Embassies are in close contact with members of the Irish community to offer assistance.
