Villa miss out as Martinez gets sent off and Emery left raging at Rogers' disallowed 'goal'

- BY DAVID MCDONNELL X@DiscoMirror

VILLANS SEE RED

MANCHESTER UNITED finally remembered how to score and in so doing put paid to Aston Villa's hopes of securing a Champions League place.

With Newcastle losing at home to Everton, 10-man Villa occupied fifth spot with 25 minutes left at Old Trafford.

But they saw their hopes dashed with two United goals in 11 minutes.

The game’s flashpoint came in first-half stoppage time, with the dismissal of Villa keeper Emiliano Martinez.

Matty Cash - under pressure from Mason Mount - underhit a pass to Martinez, allowing Hojlund to get there before him.

Hojlund prodded the ball past Martinez, whose only recourse was to wipe out the United striker with a cynical foul, for which there was only one punishment - a straight red card.

The game’ second controversy came in the 73rd minute, when Morgan Rogers chased down the ball as United keeper Altay Bayindir collected a header from Harry Maguire.
