Man never got his money back after being swindled out of €10k

- JOHN KIERANS

'Vicky fought so hard to stay alive..then we have this guy using cancer to make money...'

HEARTLESS conman DJ Carey took €10,000 from a close friend of the late Vicky Phelan and never paid him back.

He told her pal he needed the money for lifesaving stem cell treatment in America and if he didn't get it he was going to die.

But the man who declined to testify against the disgraced hurler for personal reasons told the Irish Daily Star that Carey didn't care who he hurt so long as he got the cash.

He said: "Poor Vicky Phelan fought cancer to her last breath and yet here was a guy running around the country pretending he was dying from the disease when there was nothing wrong with him.

"I knew him through the hurling and he asked me for a €10,000 loan to finance his American treatment. I believed his story at the time.

"His whole cancer story, as we all now know, was an absolute and utter lie.

"He made it all up to secure money under false pretences.

"DJ was a very good friend of mine and he duped me. I, like everyone else who gave him cash, acted in good faith.

"Imagine using cancer as a reason to con people, it is shocking."

The former friend said the harsh truth was that the hurling legend was funding his lifestyle instead of medical care.

The man added: "When he was supposed to be receiving treatment he was off playing golf all over America from New York to Augusta.
