THIS week marks the 70th anniversary of the first day of broadcasting for ITV, so let's take a look at commercial television...

ITV took to the air at 7.15pm on September 22, 1955, in London after the passing of the 1954 Broadcasting Act ended the BBC's monopoly.
The BBC tried to spike ITV's guns on the opening night by killing off Grace Archer in a fire in the popular radio soap The Archers. During a variety show hosted by Jack Jackson, the first advert was shown on British television at 8.12pm. It was for Gibbs SR toothpaste and featured a tube of the product encased in a block of ice with Meg Smith brushing her teeth “up and down and round the gums”.
