THURSDAY was the day in 1963 that War Minister John Profumo famously resigned from the UK government - but what was it all about?
JOHN Profumo was a rising star in the Conservative Party and after a “good war", he was appointed to PM Harold Macmillan's government as War Minister in 1960.
In July 1961, Profumo and his film star wife Valerie Hobson were invited to a house party at Cliveden, a stately home.
Also present on a different part of the estate was society osteopath Stephen Ward and some young women including cabaret dancer Christine Keeler.
Ward rented a cottage from the home's owner, Lord Astor, at a nominal rate.
