Rovers defeat for United on day club are kicked out of Europe

- Mark McCADDEN & Garry DOYLE reports

ANGRY Drogheda United boss Kevin Doherty said he was "sick" after UEFA's decision to kick the club out of Europe was upheld yesterday.

Drogheda, who lost at home last night 2-1 to Shamrock Rovers, had qualified for the Europa Conference League after winning last season's FAI Cup.

But club owners Trivela Group subsequently purchased a majority share in Danish side Silkeborg and their qualification for the same competition saw the League of Ireland side fall foul of UEFA's multi-club ownership rules.

And after the Court of Arbitration for Sport yesterday backed the decision, Doherty didn't hide his frustration, telling LOITV: "We are devastated, very disappointed.

"I spoke to the players. It was not the easiest conversation I have ever had.

Appeal

"We have a brilliant group of players and you can sugar coat this all you want but we are sick.
