Spanish star ready again at his home

- BY DERNIS KIRWAN

CLUB DE CAMPO in Madrid hosts this week's Open De Espana for the fifth consecutive year.

Last year's Open de Espana produced a thriller for home fans. Marbella’s Angel Hidalgo held his nerve to defeat Jon Rahm in a playoff, with fellow Spaniard David Puig one of six players who finished just a shot further back.

Spanish players have always thrived in this event - home golfers have won 40 of the 97 Spanish Opens.

Ryder Cup heroes Shane Lowry and Rahm will be the star attractions this week at Club De Campo — the latter is a three-time winner. He won in 2018, 2019 and 2022 and will be aiming to surpass the great Seve Ballesteros by claiming a fourth home Open success.

16/1 shot Lowry comes into this tournament on a real high after his stunning performance at the Ryder Cup, winning that crucial half point with everything seemingly on the line.

That should fuel Shane's confidence. He's a truly world-class player who has now proven he can deliver when the stakes are high.

Expect Shane to make a bold bid to win this title at odds of 20/1.
