POPE FRANCIS was an avid football fan - from meetings with Diego Maradona to his passion for Buenos Aires' San Lorenzo.

He was a promoter of sports in general, and the sporting world paid tribute after his death aged 88.
All sports events in Italy yesterday were postponed, including four Serie A games. And the Italian Olympic Committee said a minute's silence will be held before this week's events.
Pope Francis' passion for football became known after he was named pontiff in 2013 when San Lorenzo - nicknamed 'the Saints' - tweeted a photo of him holding the club's crest.
