I'M in no way knocking the chance of Charles Darwin in the Norfolk, and he deservedly heads the market here, but I was really impressed with the debut victory of AFJAN at Chantilly for Henri-Francois Devin, where he quickened past the entire field in the style of a high-class colt.

Afjan is out of a mare called Al Johrah, who was second to Lady Aurelia in the Queen Mary here as a juvenile and he, too, looks to have an abundance of speed.

His trainer was happy that he had an education on debut as well as winning well, with Alexis Pouchin getting the son of Mehmas to drop the bridle in the early stages before picking up strongly when asked.

That education will stand to him here and he can go well if his draw proves no hindrance.

IT'S possible to make all from a wide draw over this trip, although those who have done so have tended to keep off the inside rail until near the turn, and recent years have shown a bias towards strong-staying hold-up performers.
