Cunning & deceitful Carey duped me completely

SHAMED DJ Carey was last night locked up on protection in his own cell - in one of Ireland's most overcrowded prisons.

We have confirmed former GAA star Carey was placed in Dublin's Cloverhill remand prison yesterday after Judge Martin Nolan ordered him to be taken into custody ahead of his sentencing on Monday.

Carey was told by the judge to expect a custodial sentence, after defrauding friends, family and fans of more than €394,000 to treat a cancer he never had.

Billionaire businessman Denis O'Brien donated more than €130,000, and said in a statement to the court he was "embarrassed" to have been "duped completely".

The ex-hurler, 54, was remanded in custody yesterday after a sentencing hearing at Dublin Criminal Courts of Justice and will return to court to hear his sentence.

He pleaded guilty in July to 10 counts of inducing people to give him money after fraudulently claiming to have cancer.

The court also heard details of another eight cases which were to be taken into consideration for sentencing.

In total Carey was given €394,127 and $13,000, of which, he repaid €44,203.

Cloverhill is at 127% capacity with 550 prisoners instead of the maximum it is supposed to have of 433.

A source confirmed: "He is a high risk prisoner."

We have also established Carey will be kept in the prison over the weekend.

But once he is sentenced to the jail time the judge has warned him he is facing, Carey will then be moved to the city's Mountjoy Prison, where all prisoners locked up by the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court are sent initially.

Sources said it was likely he would serve his time in the Midlands Prison in Portlaoise, Co Laois, which houses infamous inmates like wife killer Joe O'Reilly and monster Graham Dwyer.
