New scheme of family workshops a huge success

Code clubs help parents get with the programs

PARENTS are constantly worried about their children's use of technology in a modern world in which they are almost always online.

imageOne of their big fears is that their kids already know more about tech than they do themselves.

However, a scheme which is allowing parents to learn alongside their kids is having a hugely positive impact.

A report published yesterday shows how the growing OurKidsCode network of creative coding workshops and clubs for families is enabling parents in communities across Ireland to be more proactive in their children's use of technology, with mothers comprising 72% of the parents involved.

The OurKidsCode project, based in the School of Computer Science and Statistics in Trinity College Dublin, builds parents' confidence and skills in tech alongside their children at informal, hands-on creative coding workshops.

These take place outside of school hours in libraries, primary schools and rural broadband connection point community centres.
