Biker hurt in fatal garda crash dies

Caitriona Berber said her husband Izzet Can Berber lost his fight for life on Saturday evening.

Turkish-born Mr Berber, who was a barber in Dublin and in his 30s, had been on life support in the city’s Beaumont Hospital following the incident near Swords on May 11.

The high-powered bike he was riding slammed into Garda Flatley, a 49-year-old father of two, as the Roads Policing Unit officer performed a speed check.

Garda Flatley died when the biker drove into him at the old Swords to Balbriggan Road, in the Lanestown area of Lusk in north County Dublin, at around 12.50pm.

The officer, who had been a member of the force for 26 years and was based at Dublin Castle, had attempted to flag down the bike when the incident occurred.

The motorcyclist sustained serious injuries in the incident, but died on Saturday.
