O'Shea: Ireland teams have always been capable of pulling out a big result so of course we can beat the Portuguese in Lisbon
JOHN O'SHEA has spelled out what is needed in Lisbon this weekend as Ireland bid to get their World Cup dream back on track.
A timely anniversary gave the Irish assistant manager an opportunity to reflect on the characteristics required to pull off a shock result against a top-tier opponent.
A decade ago yesterday, O'Shea was a part of Martin O'Neill's side that stunned world champions Germany at Aviva Stadium, with a Shane Long goal securing a famous 1-0 win on the way to Euro 2016.
One year before that, it was his injury-time goal that earned Ireland a point in Gelsenkirchen on the former Manchester United defender's 100th appearance for his country.
Portugal aren't the world champions right now, but their recent Nations League win has marked them out as one of the most dangerous teams in international football.
They swept past Germany in the semifinals and beat Spain in the final on penalties after a thrilling 2-2 draw in Munich.
Cristiano Ronaldos eight goals in that campaign earned him the top scorer gong - and now he is on 141 goals for his country.
