Cafes are becoming the go-to hangout spot

- BY SEAN MURPHY

NEW research published to mark World Coffee Day today shows that as many as one-in-two younger Irish consumers now prefer to get a cuppa than a pint.

The finding is among a slew of striking new data entries to emerge as coffee is celebrated around the globe.

FiXX Coffee, which has marketed itself as Ireland's first female-owned coffee business since it was established in 2004, is behind the latest study.

A spokesperson said: “Nearly half of Irish consumers now prefer meeting over coffee instead of alcohol.

“The exact figure is 48%, which shows how Irish consumers are prioritising their social interactions.

PRICE

“While 36% of consumers opt for the charm of independent local cafés, some 33% still favour alcohol, particularly males and those aged 18 to 24.

“But coffee is clearly becoming the go-to for socialising in Ireland.”

She added: “Americanos (38%) and cappuccinos (36%) are the top coffee choices when ordering in cafes. Taste is the top priority for 73% of coffee drinkers when purchasing coffee, outweighing price.
