'Winning' the Aras will be tougher than an All-Ireland

FORMER Dublin GAA boss Jim Gavin said he is "delighted" to be Fianna Fail's presidential candidate as he described himself as a "proud" republican.

The party announced yesterday that Mr Gavin - who was backed by leader Micheal Martin - won its selection convention for President of Ireland.

A special meeting of Fianna Fail's parliamentary party members took place in Leinster House yesterday.

Members had to vote between the former Dublin GAA manager and Ireland South MEP Billy Kelleher. Senators, TDs and MEPs heard pitches from both hopefuls before voting in a secret ballot.

Mr Gavin received 41 votes while Mr Kelleher received 29.

HONOUR

Speaking outside Leinster House after being announced as the party's candidate, the former Dublin GAA manager said he was "honoured".
