DONALD Trump's re-election was initially seen as a major boon for Vladimir Putin and a major blow for Ukraine, but it might not always remain so.

It has long been clear Trump's determination to bring peace is more to do with his own vanity than any compassion for Ukrainians.
It has also been long evident that Trump is whimsical, pigheaded and easily swayed by flattery.
Volodymyr Zelensky played to that weakness in Washington on Monday, whereas Putin did not in Alaska.
