Frenchman returns to his former team - five years after fireball

- BY DANIEL MOXON

ROMAIN GROSJEAN will today drive a Formula One car for the first time since the fireball crash that nearly killed him.

The Frenchman's F1 career ended after the 67G Bahrain smash in November 2020, which he miraculously survived despite his Haas bursting into flames (wreckage, right). Grosjean managed to escape the cockpit and was pulled from the fire by FIA doctor Ian Roberts.

He suffered burns to the backs of his hands and it was his final F1 race. He later moved to the American IndyCar racing series.

Grosjean was offered an F1 test with Mercedes in 2021, but it was postponed because of Covid-related travel issues.
