Blind athlete told she couldn't bring guide into store wins €6k

- BY SEAN MCCARTHAIGH

A BLIND Paralympic athlete who has won discrimination cases against businesses who stopped her and her guide dog from entering their premises has secured €6,000 compensation from Tesco.

The Workplace Relations Commission ruled the retailer breached the Equal Status Act 2000 by discriminating against Nadine Lattimore when staff from a security company told her she could not bring a dog into the store.

It directed the supermarket to put in place measures to ensure subcontractor staff were trained in legal obligations.

COMPLIANCE

The WRC also directed Tesco to put in place mechanisms to measure compliance and to display “Guide Dogs & Assistance Dogs Welcome” signage at the entrance to all stores.
