Irish 'summer scam' pair recognised by victim

AN Irish couple have been arrested on suspicion of carrying out a €1,000 scam in one of Italy's most historic towns.

The man and woman, aged 50 and 43, were detained in Assisi in recent days after a shopkeeper recognised them when they strolled past his business.

He claimed the pair had scammed him of €1,000 earlier in the summer.

The shop owner told cops he had been hit by the scam when he served the Irish couple at his souvenir business in the town a tourist hotspot in central Italy made famous because of its association with St Francis of Assisi.
