THE mum of formerly conjoined twins has been named Family Carer of the Year for 2025.

- BY DANNY DE VAAL

Angie Benhaffaf, from Carrigtwohill in Cork, was given the prestigious award in honour of nearly “16 years of extraordinary care for her twin sons”.

When she went along to her 12-week scan, Angie was told her boys Hassan and Hussein were unlikely to survive, and there was a possibility she herself might not survive the pregnancy.

But the Cork mum never gave up,and her boys, who shared every organ apart from their hearts, were born conjoined, with each twin having control of one leg.

They faced an uphill medical battle and have undergone 75 operations, including a separation surgery, and spent months away from home.

Angie has spent years fighting tirelessly for the care her sons need, all while creating a warm and joyful home for her two daughters as well.

Despite the relentless demands of caring, Angie has raised her four children to face their challenges with confidence and possibility.
