Holders United sent packing on penalties despite late drama
SHAMROCK ROVERS' hopes of a league and cup double remain on course after they knocked out cup holders Drogheda United in the last-eight, with Ed McGinty their penalty shootout hero.
Andrew Quinn scored an astonishing overhead kick in the 95th minute to send the tie into extra-time. Graham Burke had given Rovers a first-half lead.
It was an incredible end to 90 minutes packed with incident in both the goalmouth and on the sidelines.
The teams couldn't be separated in extra time so penalties decided it. For the Drogs, it was their second shootout in a row after overcoming Derry in round three.
But McGinty saved from Conor Keeley, Darragh Markey and then Dare Kareem to seal progress. Rovers last played 13 days earlier, beating Drogheda 2-1 in the Premier Division to cement their lead at the top of the league.
