YOUR WEEKLY ROUND-UP OF THE REGION'S LEADING AUCTIONEERS
-
A FOLIO of what have been described as being among the finest book illustrations of all time is predicted to make several thousand pounds when it goes under the hammer in North Lincolnshire on Thursday - half a century after being found in a junk shop.
The folio of 16 illustrations of subjects from Rudyard Kipling’s Jungle Book was commissioned in 1903 by the London publishers Macmillan from the brilliant artistic twins Maurice and Edward Detmold, young prodigies who had been exhibiting at the Royal Academy since the age of 13.
Kat Lister, of Messingham auctioneers Potters, said: “Just 500 of the folios were produced and that was for both Britain and America.
“Many have been broken up in the past 122 years so that the much admired prints could be framed individually. Very few complete folios have survived.
