FLATMATES from hell and an eccentric landlady with a stuffed dachshund named Josephine provided the comedy in Girls On Top.

The ITV sitcom launched 40 years ago, on October 23, 1985, and was an early TV showcase for the comedy talents of Dawn French, Jennifer Saunders, Ruby Wax and Tracey Ullman.

Dawn played a feminist writer called Amanda Ripley who worked for a magazine called Spare Cheeks.

She was desperately looking for an affordable place to live when the flat owned by Lady Carlton came along.
