Hospice having to cut beds and reduce staff count as income falls

The charity expanded services in 2021 when they opened the satellite unit at Ysbyty Penrhos Stanley in Holyhead on March 1.

They secured a National Lottery Community Fund grant of £450,000 to help fund staff at the satellite unit for three years.

But on Monday they announced the beds would close this October for at least a year, when the decision will be reviewed.

This also means that the roles of some staff are at risk with a consultation underway.

The island's Plaid Cymru MP and MS said it was "devastating news" for families and staff and asked for Welsh Government to step in to support the hospice sector in Wales.

A spokesperson the charity said: "St David's Hospice today (July 14) confirms with a heavy heart the temporary closure of its four Holyhead inpatient beds from October 2025.

"Services at its Llandudno and Bangor sites will continue.

"Sadly, this means a number of clinical and nonclinical positions are at risk at St David's Hospice and a full consultation is now underway.

Staff wellbeing is of utmost priority, and the Hospice is providing support to staff during this difficult time.
