PM flags potential threats due to cyber crimes, frauds and AI

Expressing concern over the potential threats of digital frauds, cybercrimes and criminals using artificial intelligence (AI) technology, particularly the potential of deepfakes to disrupt social and familial relations, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday called upon the police leadership to convert the challenge into an opportunity.
Modi was addressing the concluding session of the 59th director generals of police/ inspector generals of police (DGP/IGP) conference in Bhubaneswar.
"PM expressed concern on the potential threats generated on account of digital frauds, cybercrimes and AI technology, particularly the potential of deep fake to disrupt social and familial relations. As a counter measure, he called upon the police leadership to convert the challenge into an opportunity by harnessing India's double AI power of artificial intelligence and 'Aspirational India'," the prime minister's office (PMO) quoted Modi as saying in a statement.
The ministry of home affairs (MHA) has already formed a high-level committee to look into incidents of digital arrests and its Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (14C) is working with the police force of all states and private firms to deal with deepfakes and other cybercrimes.
