In Maha, parleys begin on election of speaker

The newly constituted Maharashtra legislative assembly will elect its speaker on December 9, during the ongoing three-day special session of the 288-member House started on Saturday.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the largest constituent in the ruling Mahayuti, is likely to keep the speaker's post with itself and may renominate Rahul Narwekar for a second term, party insiders said.
Narwekar, who won the recently concluded assembly elections from Colaba constituency in Mumbai, was also the speaker in the previous term of the assembly and presided over the disqualification petitions following the vertical split in the Shiv Sena and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). He gave verdicts in favour of Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar —both members of the ruling alliance—in disqualification pleas filed by their rival factions headed by Uddhav Thackeray and Sharad Pawar, respectively.
