EPFO staff who failed to give death insurance claims may face action

NEW DELHI: The government may act against erring officials of the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO), which failed to provide assured death insurance claims in full to the kin of over 1,000 subscribers, three people with direct knowledge of the matter said
It was noticed after an audit that EPFO made short payments of Employees' Deposit Linked Insurance (EDLI) benefits to nominees of hundreds of deceased members, in contravention to the amended scheme, which runs into at least ₹29 crore, the people said, requesting anonymity.
EDLI insurance cover was launched in 1976 by India's biggest pension fund for its members, which provides a lumpsum payment to registered family members of an employee in the event of death while still in service.
