Israel's strikes have killed at least 406 in Iran and wounded 654 while Tehran fired 270 missiles, 22 of which got through Israeli air defenses
WASHINGTON/TEHRAN/DUBAI: President Donald Trump vetoed an Israeli plan in recent days to kill the Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, two US officials told Reuters on Sunday as Israel unleashed airstrikes across Iran for a third day on Sunday and threatened even greater force as some Iranian missiles evaded Israeli air defenses to strike buildings in the heart of the country.
"Have the Iranians killed an American yet? No. Until they do we're not even talking about going after the political leadership," said one of the officials.
Israel's strikes have killed at least 406 people in Iran and wounded another 654, according to a human rights group that has long tracked the country, Washington-based Human Rights Activists. Iran's government has not offered overall casualty figures.
Iran has fired over 270 missiles, 22 of which got through the country's sophisticated multi-tiered air defenses to make impact, according to Israeli figures. The country's main international airport and airspace remained closed for a third day.
Despite evidence that the conflict between Israel and Iran is escalating, US President Donald Trump expressed optimism on Sunday that peace would come soon and cited the possibility that Russia's Vladimir Putin could help.
