A political slugfest erupted on Wednesday following an assassination attempt on former Punjab deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal in Amritsar, with the Opposition Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) criticizing the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government over the "deteriorating" law and order situation in the state, and the ruling party calling the attack a "conspiracy to defame Punjab and Punjabis".
Badal's Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), meanwhile, accused the AAP government of targeting its critics, calling for a probe by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in the matter over alleged connection of the accused to pro-Khalistan groups.
Meanwhile, SAD leader Naresh Gujral called for a probe by the federal anti-terror agency into the incident, alleging the accused had "Khalistani" connections. "As per preliminary reports, the attacker has Khalistani connections," Gujral said.
