Cabinet okays Bill to shift varsity appointment powers to govt

The Hemant Soren cabinet has approved a Bill proposing to transfer the power to appoint Vice Chancellors (VC), pro-VCs, and financial advisors in the state universities from the Governor to the state government, people aware of the development said on Friday.
The cabinet, chaired by chief minister Hemant Soren, cleared the Jharkhand State University Bill, 2025, which is likely to be tabled in the assembly during the upcoming session beginning August 1, on Thursday, along with 20 other proposals.
The Bill also proposes the establishment of the Jharkhand State University Services Commission (JSUSC) for the appointment of all academic and nonacademic posts in the state universities. Currently, the recruitment of all teaching and non-teaching staff across state universities in Jharkhand is conducted by the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) and the Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC). The Bill would also replace all other Acts regulating the universities and would become an ‘Umbrella Act’ for the purpose, officials said.
