West Bengal sports minister Aroop Biswas resigned on Tuesday as the government issued a show cause notice to state director general of police Rajeev Kumar and took disciplinary action against a number of other officers for the December 13 rampage at Kolkata's Salt Lake stadium by a section of spectators who bought tickets to see Argentine football star Lionel Messi but flared up when he left in a hurry because of mismanagement, officials said.

“Chief minister Mamata Banerjee accepted Biswas’s handwritten resignation letter. She will look after the sports department until the inquiries ordered into the incident are over,” a member of the state cabinet told HT requesting anonymity.
