AHMEDABAD: On May 5, a small wooden boat capsized in rough waters off Torrey Pines State Beach, about 30 miles north of the US-Mexico border near San Diego. The panga — a flat-bottomed fishing vessel traditionally used in Mexico and Central America — was carrying at least 16 people in a suspected human smuggling operation. Among them was the Patel family from Mehsana district of Gujarat, attempting to illegally enter the US from Mexico.
