City to get first 'khatara' centres
Hindustan Times Mumbai
|April 18, 2025
Space-starved Mumbai will soon have its first official 'khatara' (abandoned vehicles) scrapping centres, with facilities being set up in Panvel and Karjat.
MUMBAI: The decision was finalised earlier this week during a meeting between Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) and officials from the state transport department.
According to sources, the centres are expected to be operational by July or August this year.
Once commissioned, these will be among the eight scrapping centres across Maharashtra. The remaining six will come up in Pune, Nashik, Nagpur, Jalna, and Raigad. The initiative is part of a broader push under the national Vehicle Scrappage Policy, aimed at phasing out old, polluting vehicles and reducing congestion.
