MUMBAI: If all goes according to plan, teachers in Maharashtra's government-run schools will be compelled to wear uniforms in future. This was announced by school education minister Dadaji Bhuse during an event at a Zilla Parishad (ZP) school, in Malegaon, recently.

The idea of a uniform dress code for teachers came upon Bhuse at the function where school bags and other stationery articles were distributed to students through ONGC's Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) wing in collaboration with Avant Foundation, which works in the health and education sectors. At the event, women teachers had turned up in matching sarees, leading Bhuse to float the idea.

"Just like doctors and police officers have uniforms, why not teachers," Bhuse remarked in his address to the school. "When a teacher is in uniform, it becomes easier for people to recognise them. I noticed a few teachers wearing matching sarees at the event — together they projected an idea of discipline. I am inspired by them and hence using this platform to make this announcement."
