5th accused held in Durgapur rape case, sent to police custody

A fifth person was arrested on Monday in connection with the alleged gang rape of a 23-year-old medical student in a forested area near her college campus in Durgapur, West Bengal, late on October 10, police said.

The suspect, identified as Sheikh Safiqul, 28, was produced before the Durgapur court along with Sheikh Nasiruddin, 29, who was arrested late on Sunday. Both were remanded in police custody for 9 days, officials said. The three other suspects — Apu Bauri (21), Firdous Shiekh (23), and Sheikh Riazuddin (32) — were remanded in police custody on Sunday.
