Custodial death: Himachal IGP Zaidi, 7 other cops get life term

The case dates back to 2017 when an accused arrested by the SIT formed in a gangrape case died in custody
CHANDIGARH: The court of special CBI judge Alka Malik on Monday sentenced eight police officials, including senior IPS officer and Himachal Pradesh inspector general of police Zahur Haider Zaidi to life imprisonment in a 2017 custodial death case.
The court also imposed a fine of ₹1 lakh on each convict.
While pronouncing the verdict, the court asserted that the police officials deserve "deterrent punishment and not leniency". It further stated that increasing incidents of torture and death in police custody show that there is still the worst violation of human rights taking place, that too, at the hands of law enforcement agencies, as in this case. The court added that the police are exploiting powers in "very unruly and brutal ways" as is evident in the present case.
"In the instant case, police personnel have resorted to extreme torture and beating of the inmates housed in the lockup resulting in the death of one of them namely Suraj Singh," said the court.
