Coach Mike Hesson rued how his team was outplayed in both batting and bowling on the spin-friendly R Premadasa Stadium pitch.Pakistan sprang a spin surprise when skipper Salman Agha bowled the opening over and removed Abhishek Sharma for nought. But Usman Tariq, whose pause before delivering has been disconcerting for batters and was the focus of attention in the buildup to the match, was held back until Ishan Kishan (77 off 40 balls), who set up India’s innings, was dismissed in the ninth over.

Tariq was the silver lining for Pakistan, but Hesson defended holding him back until the 11th over. The unorthodox bowler sent down the 11th (6 runs), 13th (10 runs), 17th (4 runs) and the 19th overs (5 runs, 1 wkt), returning 4-0-24-1.
