Top court cancels Darshan’s bail; actor, main accused held

The Supreme Court on Thursday cancelled the bail granted to Kannada actor Darshan along with six others facing trial over the murder of a fan, observing that leniency in such grave cases sends the wrong message to society and undermines public confidence in the system.
Hours later, the actor and his friend Pavithra Gowda, the prime accused in the murder case, were arrested.
With this order, the top court has set aside the December 13, 2024 judgment of the Karnataka high court granting bail.
The bench of justices JB Pardiwala and R Mahadevan said, “Granting leniency to such persons despite grave charges of conspiracy and murder sends the wrong message to society and undermines public confidence in the justice system.”
