Leave streets today: HC to protesters

The Maratha quota agitation has brought Mumbai to a standstill, the Bombay high court said on Monday as it warned activist Manoj Jarange-Patil and his supporters to vacate the streets by Tuesday afternoon.

Soon after the order, Jarange-Patil told his supporters to clear the roads, while maintaining that he “will not go till reservation is given”.

Jarange-Patil, whose indefinite hunger strike entered the fourth day on Monday, has been insisting that all Marathas in Marathwada (central Maharashtra) should be treated as Kunbis as they were during the Nizam rule.

During a special hearing in response to a PIL filed by Amy Foundation —an NGO dedicated to protecting public welfare and safety —a bench of justices Ravindra Ghuge and Gautam Ankhad underlined that the protesters had not remained at the designated place, Azad Maidan, for the agitation and have spread out across south Mumbai, including Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and Churchgate railway stations, Marine Drive promenade, and the high court building.
