Dasara is a festival of peace and harmony. We can win in life, not with arms, but with literature and prosper with love, Booker Prizewinning writer Banu Mushtaq said on Monday as she inaugurated the 11-day Dasara festivities at the Chamundeshwari temple in Mysuru on Monday amid a raging controversy over the Karnataka government's decision to invite the author as the event's chief guest.
Chief minister Siddaramaiah, who attended the event, defended the state's decision to invite Mushtaq, saying Dasara is a "Nada Habba (state festival)". The festivities began three days after the Supreme Court on Friday dismissed a plea challenging the Karnataka government's decision to invite Mushtaq, stressing that Dasara is a state festival and cannot be reduced to a purely religious ceremony.
