Amid tensions, Trump picks aide Gor as India ambassador

US President Donald Trump on Friday nominated Sergio Gor, his 38-year-old political confidant, as ambassador to India, ending months of speculation as ties between New Delhi and Washington face mounting strain over tariffs and energy trade.

The announcement on Truth Social elevated Gor, who currently heads the powerful White House Presidential Personnel Office, to one of America’s most sensitive diplomatic postings.

“Tam pleased to announce that Iam promoting Sergio Gor to be our next United States Ambassador to the Republic of India, and Special Envoy for South and Central Asian Affairs,” Trump posted, calling Gor a “great friend” and acknowledging his contributions to the President's past political campaigns.

Trump emphasised the trust element, stating: “For the most populous Region in the World, it is important that I have someone Ican fully trust to deliver on my Agenda and help us, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN.”

The nomination was welcomed by secretary of state Marco Rubio, vice president JD Vance, FBI director Kash Patel and under secretary of defence for policy Elbridge Colby. Itnow requires Senate approval.
