City breathes easy as rain improves AQI

CHANDIGARH: With a long dry spell in November, Saturday's 34.1 mm rain has cleaned the city's air, and the air quality index (AQI) fell into the 'satisfactory' category for the first time this season since Diwali night.
As per the daily AQI bulletin released by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), AQI on Sunday fell to 88, which falls in the 'satisfactory' category. It is between 51-100 and it is still not the best air bracket which is 50 and below. It can cause minor breathing discomfort to sensitive people.
This AQI is calculated by taking the average of AQI readings at all three Continuous Ambient Air Quality Monitoring Stations (CAAQMS) in Sectors 22, 25 and 53 at 4 pm. The AQI values are also calculated by taking the average of the past 24 hours.
