The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has launched an offensive against Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, holding his family accountable for the alleged suicide of a contractor in Karnataka.

BENGALURU: The incident, involving civil contractor Sachin Panchal, has escalated political tensions in the state, with the BJP calling for the resignation of Kharge's son, Priyank Kharge, who is the state's rural development and panchayat raj minister.

Contractor Panchal, 26, allegedly ended his life on Thursday by lying down in front of a moving train. In a seven-page suicide note posted on social media, Panchal accused Priyank's associate, Raju Kapanur, of issuing threats over financial disputes. He claimed that Kapanur demanded ₹1 crore and threatened him over financial matters. Additionally, the note named four others as accomplices in the threats.

Leader of Opposition R Ashoka strongly criticised Priyank Kharge, alleging direct involvement of his close associates in Panchal's death. "Does Ambedkar's Constitution not apply to the Kharge family? Priyank Kharge, who preaches to everyone, should resign and demonstrate morality," Ashoka said. He added that Priyank's resignation was necessary to ensure justice in the case.

In response to the allegations, Priyank Kharge denied any involvement in Panchal's death and expressed willingness to face a thorough investigation. "I am ready to face any kind of probe to come clean on the matter," he said, adding that the BJP's demands for his resignation lacked evidence.

The BJP has intensified its protests in Kalaburagi, the home district of Priyank Kharge, dubbing it the "Republic of Kalaburagi." They accused the minister of presiding over a region where governance has deteriorated under his influence. Leader of Opposition in the legislative council Chalavadi Narayanaswamy called for Priyank Kharge's removal from the cabinet and immediate arrest.
