UP: 26 die in fog-related accidents

At least 26 people were killed and dozens injured in a series of dense fog-linked road accidents across Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday, with the worst tragedy unfolding on the Yamuna Expressway in Mathura, where a multi-vehicle pileup turned into an inferno claiming 13 lives, police said.

Apart from the maximum fatalities in Mathura, four people each were killed in accidents in Basti and Unnao and two each in Meerut and Barabanki, with officials linking all incidents to poor visibility due to dense winter fog.

In Mathura, eight buses and three smaller vehicles collided in dense fog on the Agra-Noida carriageway near the 127-km milestone on the Yamuna Expressway early on Tuesday. Senior superintendent of police (SSP), Mathura, Shlok Kumar said the accident occurred when drivers failed to see vehicles ahead in near-zero visibility around 4.30 am near Baldev town. "Initially, four deaths were reported. However, during a detailed search of the burnt buses, charred remains were recovered, taking the toll to 13," the SSP said.
