Panama, Greenland hit back at Trump over acquisition threats

Panama's President Jose Raul Mulino has dismissed threats made by US President-elect Donald Trump to retake control of the Panama Canal over complaints of "unfair" treatment of American ships while Greenland on Monday stressed that it was not for sale, after Trump again suggested he wanted the United States to take control of the strategic island that holds major mineral and oil reserves.

Panama's leader takes up feud with Trump
"Every square metre of the Panama Canal and its adjacent zones is part of Panama, and it will continue to be," President Mulino said on Sunday in a video statement on X, the social platform. Mulino's defense of Panamanian control over the key commercial waterway shows how Trump is already exerting global influence after he brought control over the canal into play over the weekend, decrying "ridiculous" transit fees for US vessels and alleged Chinese encroachment.
