Warsaw stocks fall after govt announces tax hike for banks

Poland’s blue-chip stock index fell on Friday, underperforming the region, after the government said that it planned to raise the corporate income tax on banks, while investors also eyed the Jackson Hole meeting of the US Federal Reserve.

Warsaw’s blue-chip index fell 3.988 by 0820 GMT, dragged down by banks. The Polish finance ministry said late on Thursday that it planned to raise corporate income tax (CIT) for banks to 30% in 2026 from the current 19%, to finance increased defence spending.
