Sharjah transport body adds 10 electric buses to intercity fleet

The Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority (SRTA) is set to introduce 10 new electric buses to its intercity transport fleet next month.

This will increase the number of electric buses in operation to 20.

They will run on major routes connecting Sharjah to several neighbouring emirates, most notably the Sharjah-Ajman route.

SRTA has confirmed that 10 electric buses are currently in operation on several intercity routes and that final preparations are underway to launch an additional 10 buses next month, once registration and factory preparation procedures have been completed.

Ali Rashid Al Qars, Head of Operations at the Authority's Intercity Transport Department, pointed out that this step is part of efforts to shift towards sustainable transport and reduce carbon emissions.

This is being achieved by enhancing the intercity transport fleet with environmentally friendly, 100% electric buses.

He added that electric buses are identified on the bus tracking system, which is connected to the Authority's control room, by their green colour, which symbolises clean energy and environmental sustainability. Purple is used to designate diesel-powered buses. He added that electric buses have started operating on the Sharjah-Ajman route due to heavy traffic and the presence of charging stations equipped for this purpose, including the main station at the shelter site.
