Court orders fresh probe into Rs1.42b ransom threat to tycoon

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has ordered a fresh investigation into a first information report (FIR) alleging that an unknown person demanded 50 bitcoins — worth over Rs 1.42 billion - from real estate mogul Malik Riaz as ransom and threatened harm to his family in Pakistan and abroad if the demand was not met, said a report.
Documents showed that the IHC set aside an order of the Judicial Magistrate, who had dismissed the case. IHC judge Justice Muhammad Asif allowed a petition filed by Col (retd) Khalilur Rehman and ordered a proper investigation.
The FIR No. 117/25 was registered on Jan 29, 2025 under section 506 (criminal intimidation) Pakistan Penal Code (PPC). The case file includes screenshots and headers of emails referencing Malik Riaz and Bahria Town, and a demand for 50 bitcoins coupled with threats.
